THE PROJECTS OF THE NEW 42ND STREET
The New Victory Theater is New York City's first and only full-time performing arts theater for kids, their families and classmates. Since it opened in 1995, The New Victory has quickly become an integral part of the cultural landscape in New York City, presenting a full season of adventurous multidisciplinary works from around the globe and close to home. The New Vic seeks out sophisticated, thought-provoking, professional productions that are as artistically rich as they are entertaining. Tickets are made affordable as a result of support from a variety of public and private sources and cost an average of $17, with seats for members available for as little as $8.75.
The New 42nd Street Studios building is a state-of-the-art, 10-story rehearsal studio/office/theater "complex" comprised of the New 42nd Street Studios and The Duke on 42nd Street theater. Opened in 2000, the New 42nd Street Studios is considered the premier rehearsal space in all of New York City, serving a vast and diverse group of nonprofit dance, theater and opera groups, as well as commercial Broadway musicals and plays. Designed by Platt Byard Dovell Architects, the New 42nd Street Studios building itself was awarded the New York State Association of Architects/AIA Excellence in Design Award.
The Duke on 42nd Street is an intimate 200-seat black box theater that opened in 2000 and is rented throughout the year to domestic and international producing and presenting organizations. Companies presenting at The Duke on 42nd Street include: The 92nd Street Y's Harkness Dance Project; Theatre for a New Audience; The NYC Tap Festival; Rosie's Broadway Kids; Playwrights Horizons, and the National Theater of Great Britain, The New 42nd Street and The New Victory Theater. Companies presented by The New 42nd Street have included: Karole Armitage; Chicago Shakespeare Theater; Naked Angels and Dan Klores, and The Classical Theatre of Harlem. In 2005, The Green Thumb Theatre inaugurated The New Victory’s "New Vic at The Duke" program. Subsequent companies that participated in the series have included Steppenwolf Theater Company, Zeal Theatre and New International Encounter. This fall, Lincoln Center Theater launched LCT3 at The Duke on 42nd Street, a new initiative devoted to the work of emerging playwrights, directors and designers, with two productions during the 2008-09 season.
